ICONS ARE BETTER #47: THE RUBIK’S CUBE
Nothing epitomizes the 1980s more than the Rubik’s Cube. When I first saw one I just knew I had to get one for myself. It is a beautiful piece of engineering design.
The perfect puzzle in fact. And it seemed to cross generations, with both kids and adults desperate to learn how to do it. Not only is it extremely portable, once you’ve picked it up, it becomes almost impossible to put down again. The bright colours lure you in, you just have to try and put them all back in to their rightful places…something that played havoc with my OCD nature. Everywhere I went I took it with me, trying to solve it day in day out. And if I hadn’t learnt how to actually complete it, I’m sure I’d still be struggling to solve it today. It’s just wonderful, a mainstay for any icon listing.
