ICONS ARE BETTER #40: ALEXANDER MCQUEEN
Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty. The first and largest retrospective of the late designer’s work in Europe closes this weekend. By Sunday afternoon I will have seen the exhibition five times.
McQueen is one of fashion’s most famous names – up there with Paul Smith and Tom Ford – even people who don’t know anything about fashion know of the name.
His work is audacious and outrageous, but not just for the sake of it. His collections are steeped in history and often autobiographical. But it’s his skillset as a tailor that allowed him to create such work.
He trained as a tailor on Saville Row and subsequently all his collections pushed boundaries both technically and creatively. His collections were perfectly cut and each item gained an impeccably tailored look.
He understood the rules he was supposed to follow and therefore understood how to demolish them.
In each item of clothing you can see Alexander McQueen – his personality, his passion and his mastery. This is what makes him an icon.
‘You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.’
