ICONS ARE BETTER #2: NEW YORK YELLOW TAXI

It’s been said before, but I love New York.

It’s my favourite city in the world. It just has something magical about it and if I had to put my finger on any one thing I’d squarely land on the taxi.

Bold colour, good start.

Powerful shape. Tick.

But basically it works because of the semiotics. It features in every amazing film from Trading Places to Wall Street, Big to er….Taxi Driver.

The moment you see one you’re in the movies. The moment you get in one you are Gordon Gekko. It has a powerful, unconscious effect on your entire psyche – I think that’s the good start of creating an icon. Love it unconsciously before you even start to rationalise.
